It was the best of the old and the best of the new.įor their sequel, Flying Wild Hog have kept the fundamentals but built an entirely different game atop them.

The 2013 reboot succeeded because it took the principles of a nineties FPS and dragged them kicking and bleeding into the twenty-first century, adding superb melee combat controls, a well thought-out upgrade system, but sticking with linear levels packed with easter eggs and secrets. Damned if you do.Shadow Warrior 2 could have gone horribly wrong. I could plug in a controller (if it supports one?) but then I would lose the ability to quick and accurate with every other aspect of the game. Trying to do them in the heat of battle is no fun. Basically, we are given key combinations in order to complete special moves. It doesn't work on a keyboard/mouse setup. My number one hate for the game is the 'power' moves. Graphics are stunning and atmospheric (if your machine has got the minerals). So far the story is actually worth following. Quite a bit of pure comedy gold from a ghost that follows you around. There's elements of puzzle, requiring hunting for a key (hence the reference to Doom). Sometimes you need to break out the occasional gun or crossbow but it's not quite as much fun. Wonder around with sword in hand, chopping off limbs or just beheading hoards of demons. It is old school FPS - it even uses F5/F8!!! A little repetitive if you play for long periods but if like me, you want a quick hour of game, it's perfect. Looking at a few 'professional' reviews, the consensus seems to be that it's a mediocre game but then you read the comments and people as a whole disagree - me too!

For now though, I urge all PC FPS fans to grab a copy. We have an unusual situation where a game has come out on PC first, the next gen consoles are supposedly due to get this gem later on this year. Recommended.Ī mix of Serious Sam and Doom with a sword thrown in. Despite this, it's well worth a look for this price. It's fun and kept me chuckling despite the hyper-violence (blood and dismemberment) but it's ultimately a little bit repetitive. All the while it's set in a beautiful - if a little graphically dated - Japanese scenery, replete with monasteries, dojos, cherry blossom and koi ponds. The money you collect can be spent on upgrading your weaponry - pistols, SMGs etc. There are upgrades based on tattoos on your body, allowing you to learn new katana skills and healing skills. The ghost friend cracks wise the entire time and even Wang has a fair few one liners to interject (after one especially heavy firefight Wang quips "I guess I was just too much Wang for them") and fortune cookies provide you with such wisdom as "A Wang in the hand is worth two in the bush". The deal quickly goes south as the seller is rudely dismembered by interdimensional demons also after the sword and Wang has to fight his way out with the help of his newly acquainted ghost friend. You are Wang - the ninja lackey employed by Zilla to obtain a fabled sword. Shadow Warrior is an 80's comedy of sorts sure, it's based around demons and eviscerating people with a katana but it's actually very funny at multiple points. It’s not open world, as is de rigueur these days, but its linearity keeps the story, and the game progression, on the rails and never detracts from the fun.

Graphically, SW is one of the most stunning games I’ve come across, and it also delivers some impressive physics. And there’s also plenty of amusing, deliberately cheesy, dialogue to enjoy. There are some very cool cutscenes, but they’re used sparsely and never intrude but do help to flesh out the story. There’s also a stronger story, although it is a tad incoherent at times. It differs from Hard Reset in some areas, however, most notably with the variety of weapons and the more conventional upgrade system and skills tree. It also shares much of the mechanics and gameplay tropes of the earlier game, and that’s all to the good as well.

And that’s basically what SW is all about: katana mayhem. Like it’s predecessor, it’s an old-school shooter, but with SW we get the added fun of melee combat. As with Flying Wild Hog’s previous title, Hard Reset (great, 4/5) SHADOW WARRIOR is a whole lot of riotous fun.
